Town/City Upgrade

A system mechanic Alexander unlocked with the quest Contribute to the Economy V.

In order to trigger the Town Upgrade system, you need to build a monument (if you don’t have one already) and declare yourself owner of the place. You will then be prompted to choose the type of city or town you want and get a challenge based on what you pick. If you succeed, the monument lets you unlock town upgrades that everyone in the city can complete.

New monuments CAN be built in case the old one has been lost.

The city upgrades you get will depend on the sort of challenge you picked, but, generally speaking, these will be things related to the challenge/scenario you were presented with. Economic towns may have an easier time collecting taxes, military cities may build weapons quicker, etc.

Since the challenge is based on what you pick, people can somewhat guess what the challenge is going to be even before they pick something. Economic challenges will have you sell these many products, profiting this much or that much, that sort of thing. Military challenges, in comparison, will have you defend the city from a certain enemy.

Amissa

  • The city of Amissa has begun an economic challenge. Any opposing faction has one day to declare itself opposed to your claim. Your city challenge has been determined to be medium difficulty. To claim this city as your own, you must complete the following within one year:

    • Have at least one million silver coins worth of goods traded within the border of your city.

    • Trade with three different factions other than your own.

    • Complete at least five successful trading missions to another city.

Lakeside

  • The city of Lakeside has begun a military challenge. Any opposing faction has one day to declare itself opposed to your claim. Your city challenge has been determined to be extreme difficulty. To claim this city as your own, you must complete the following challenge:

    • Survive with at least 25% of your city intact.

    • Survive with at least 25% of your forces alive.

    • Defeat the final boss of the challenge.

  • Congratulations, you have completed the city challenge Barbarians at the Gate. Individual contributions are being tallied and rewards will be available within 24 hours. You are the first city on this world to successfully complete a military challenge at the extreme difficulty level. All defenders have earned a unique achievement for their accomplishment.

    • Lakeside Veteran: You gain a permanent 10% increase to all attributes. Anytime a fellow veteran of Lakeside is in need, all other veterans nearby will be notified, and Fate itself will try its best to bring your fellow veterans to your aid.

      • This achievement left an imprint, almost like a tattoo, on the arms of  every one of the veterans.

        • Legio I, which meant First Legion was given to the legionnaires.

        • Legio II, Mare Nostrum, which meant Second Legion, Our Sea, was given to Theo and the sailors.

        • Legio III, Venetia, which meant Third Legion, Venice, was given to the guards that had accompanied Mikael and Mikael himself.

        • Laude Peregrinus, which meant Honorable Wanderer, was given to the adventurers.

        • Laude Mercinarius, which meant Honorable Mercenary, was given to the mercenaries.

        • Laude Structor, which meant Honorable Builder, was given to the builders, crafters, laborers, drivers, and all sorts of workers who had helped in some way or another.

  • Blood Fields Upgrade

    • The battle is over, but the souls of those you have killed remain. So much blood has been spilled that the world itself cries out in agony. The fields north of your city, where thirty thousand men and women met their end, shall forever be inhospitable to enemies of your city. Any foe daring to cross the Blood Fields will draw the wrath of the Blood Shades of the Heruli Tribe, who are now bound to your city’s service for all eternity.

  • The monument we had built to begin the challenge had changed once our victory was announced. The simple carved stone had transformed into a huge statue in the central square of the city. The backdrop was a perfect likeness of me and Ibi riding into battle, Ibi’s wings spread wide and her mouth open as if she was about to unleash her breath weapon. I was on her back, my pistol pointed downward, an expression of intense concentration on my face. Underneath Ibi’s chest was a trio of dwarves firing a cannon, the cannoneer crew perfectly captured right at the moment they were firing the cannon. Next to them were a handful of men and women from our legion standing shoulder to shoulder, rifles aimed into the distance, their faces smudged and tired but resolute and focused. On the other side of the dwarves was a single Tlihi standing next to her raptor, reins and lance in hand. And next to her was even a Venetian guard in his uniform, shortsword in hand. And then last, but not least, peeking around the guard’s leg was even a small goblin holding a lit grenade, a fierce grin on the little monster’s face. The statue was more beautiful than I could have possibly imagined. After the change to the monument had been discovered, the plaza had become the place for everyone to spend their downtime, a crowd almost always gathered to admire the new monument. I found myself there more often than not as well, admiring the fine detail of the statue and taking pride in seeing such a beautifully carved representation of our powerful and diverse legion.
