Runes/Enchantments

Runes are an essential component of Nova Roma's magic system. In fact, the earliest representation of 'magic' Alexander was presented was an enchantment made up of three runes carved into a magical arrow which Asylaion called an Arrow of Penetration. Runes contain the energy needed to activate a certain effect, and they allow anyone—given they have the tools to activate these runes—to make use of the magical effects of an enchanted item.

The people responsible for carving runes into an item are called Enchanters. Enchantments can be charged with the energy contained within an orb.

Orichalcum is the material used to enchant high-grade items. The Concealment Runes on Alexander’s cloak, for instance, were woven onto the coak using orichalcum threads. It shimmers in the light and can take on a variety of colors depending on how light hits it.

Orichalcum draws mana from the atmosphere, though the explanation behind that was unknown. Unlike traditional enchantments, it doesn’t need to be charged.

Known uses of runes/known runes:

  • Arrow of Penetration (Three Rune Enchantment) (Chapter 5 of Book 1) 

    • Trigger Rune

      • Causes the enchantment to activate once the arrow is fired.

    • Penetration Rune

      • Causes the arrow to fly significantly faster.

    • Durability Rune

      • Strengthens the arrow so it can handle the speed it can achieve when fired.

  • Bullets (of Penetration) (Chapter 5 of Book 1)

    • Same runes as the Arrow of Penetration

  • Enchanted Clothes (Chapter 9 of Book 1)

    • Concealment Rune

  • Explosive Arrow

    • Explosion Rune

      • Causes the arrow to explode on impact. May also set the target alight.

  • Arrow of Stasis

    • Stasis Rune

      • Freezes the enemy on impact.

  • Arrow of Confusion

    • Confusion Rune

      • Triggers a state of confusion in whoever’s struck by the weapon that causes them to turn and attack anyone nearby.

  • Arrow of Darkness

    • Darkness Rune

      • Causes a large area to be blanketed in impenetrable blackness, blinding enemies.

  • Holy Arrow

    • Holy Rune(?)

      • Creates an explosion of golden light to which Ghost-type monsters are weak against.

  • Arrow of Blinding (Chapter 13 of Book 1)

    • Activation Rune (=Trigger Rune)

    • Durability Rune

    • Light Rune

      • Explodes with light.

  • Multi-Arrow

    • Activation Rune

    • Penetration Rune

    • Battery Rune

      • Modifies the arrow so it can hold and store additional energy.

    • Multiplication Rune

      • Causes a multiplication effect, creating several copies of the enchanted item.
